Compassion in Dying

Faith groups play a key role in many communities which are underserved by formal services, particularly Black, Asian and ethnic minority communities.

The Good Grief Connects project with Compassion in Dying involved collaboration with the Subco Trust, which works with Asian elders and carers in Newham, one of the poorest areas of the UK, and with Newham Council.

This project had three objectives:

  1. To explore, understand and document the coproduction approach used by CiD in developing and delivering projects in collaboration with community-based organisations like Subco which support minoritised communities.
  2. To explore Subco members’ and key stakeholders’ views and experiences of the impact of the collaboration between CiD and the Subco Trust.
  3. To explore barriers to and facilitators of conversations about ‘what matters most’, advance care planning, death, dying and bereavement in South Asian communities in Newham.

Over the past 18 months, Compassion in Dying and Subco Trust have co-produced and facilitated 4 workshops with Subco members. The content of each workshop was informed by Subco elders themselves – outlining the topics that they wanted to find out more about. Themes included: getting information about their health or diagnosis; learning about Advance Care Plans, Advance Statements & Health Power of Attorney, and; having conversations with family members about future wishes. Importantly, the workshops provided an opportunity for people to think about their wishes and offered a space to have conversations with each other.

On the 9th of October, we held a special Good Grief event titled: talking about and planning for the end of life in South Asian Communities. It was a one-hour webinar with a panel discussion and launch a co-produced report which aims to ensure South Asian communities are better understood and supported.

The panel was facilitated by Dr Jamilla Hussain, who was joined by Taskin Saleem and Naheed Anwar from the Subco Trust, Usha Grieve from Compassion in Dying, and Dr Olly Clabburn from the University of Bristol. The Good Grief Connects project is funded by the National Lottery Foundation Bringing People Together Fund.
